Understanding Your Mutation

Every mutant is unique.

No two mutations manifest in exactly the same way, and no two heroes follow the same path. Some mutants possess immense physical power. Others command strange energies, manipulate minds, or reshape the world around them in ways science is still struggling to understand.

To help classify the incredible variety of mutations found throughout the world, Arcadian Institute uses a system known as Archetypes.

An Archetype is not a class in the traditional sense.

Unlike many roleplaying games, choosing an Archetype does not lock your character into a rigid role, determine every ability they gain, or dictate how they must be played.

Instead, an Archetype represents the broad category of mutant your character belongs to and provides a framework for understanding how their powers naturally develop.

Think of an Archetype as your mutation's foundation rather than its destination.

NOT A CLASS SYSTEM

At Arcadian Institute, two students may share the same Archetype and yet possess completely different powers.

Likewise, two students with very different Archetypes may fill similar roles within a team.

For example:

A telepath and a technomancer may both serve as investigators.

A powerhouse and a stone manipulator may both function as frontline defenders.

A speedster and a portal creator may both excel at mobility and reconnaissance.

Your Archetype describes the nature of your mutation.

Your powers, skills, attributes, and choices determine who you become.

WHAT ARCHETYPES PROVIDE

Choosing an Archetype grants several benefits during character creation.

These may include:

Starting Bonuses

Each Archetype provides bonuses that reflect the natural strengths of that mutation type.

Mutation Development

Certain powers may be easier to learn or improve depending on your Archetype. Eg: movement speed for a speedster.

Character Identity

Your Archetype helps establish how your mutation manifests and how it is perceived by others. Eg: elemental controllers specialising in fire may anger quickly and have a reputation for being hot-headed at times

Roleplaying Opportunities

Different Archetypes often face different challenges, expectations, and social reactions within the world. Eg: whether your particular mutation is visible or hidden can change how you are perceived by others.

NO RIGHT OR WRONG CHOICE

Every Archetype offers unique strengths and weaknesses.

Some provide incredible offensive capabilities.

Others focus on utility, defence, support, exploration, investigation, or leadership.

The most powerful character is not necessarily the one with the most destructive powers.

Many of history's greatest heroes relied upon intelligence, creativity, compassion, or teamwork rather than raw strength.

Choose the Archetype that best reflects the character you want to play.

MUTATIONS EVOLVE

One of the most important things to remember is that mutations are rarely static.

As characters gain experience, face challenges, and learn more about themselves, their powers may evolve in unexpected ways.

A student who begins with simple abilities may one day become one of the world's most powerful mutants.

Likewise, a character's greatest strength may emerge from a power they initially overlooked.

Growth is part of every hero's journey.

WHO WILL YOU BECOME?

Will you become a living weapon capable of incredible feats of strength?

A master of energy and elemental forces?

A telepath capable of touching minds?

A brilliant technomancer who shapes the future through innovation?

A reality-bending anomaly that challenges the very laws of physics?

Or something entirely unique?

The choice is yours.

Your Archetype is only the beginning.

What you become afterward is your story to tell.

This introduction should lead naturally into the individual Archetypes when you define them later, while making it very clear to players that Archetypes are closer to mutant origins, mutation categories, or power families than traditional RPG classes.
