Toughness Game Mechanics

Power Rank Progression

Toughness is the ability to withstand punishment that would cripple or kill ordinary people.

While Regeneration allows a mutant to recover from injury, Toughness prevents that injury from occurring in the first place. These mutants possess bodies capable of enduring extraordinary levels of force, whether through dense musculature, living metal skin, crystalline physiology, stone-like flesh, force-absorbing tissues, or some other biological adaptation.

To a Tough mutant, bullets become nuisances.

Explosions become survivable.

Disasters become manageable.

As their powers develop, they become increasingly difficult to injure until they eventually stand among the most durable beings on Earth.

Some heroes strike fear into villains through power.

Others do so simply because they refuse to fall.

Rank 1: Enhanced Durability

Emerging Potential

The mutant possesses noticeably greater resilience than an ordinary human.

Minor injuries are less severe, and physical impacts that would harm others can often be shrugged off.

Capabilities:

  • Enhanced resistance to injury.

  • Reduced bruising and fractures.

  • Improved physical resilience.

  • Increased survivability.

Bonus:

+10 AC

Special:

Gain resistance to minor environmental hazards.

Examples:

  • Survive falls that would injure others.

  • Ignore minor cuts and scrapes.

  • Resist everyday physical trauma.

Rank 2: Reinforced Physiology

Trained Resilience

The mutant's body becomes significantly more difficult to damage.

Capabilities:

  • Resist conventional weapons.

  • Endure extreme impacts.

  • Survive dangerous environments.

  • Maintain effectiveness under fire.

Bonus:

+15 AC

Special:

Gain Damage Reduction 2 against non-powered physical attacks.

Examples:

  • Bullets leave bruises rather than wounds.

  • Vehicle collisions become survivable.

  • Falls from great heights become manageable.

Rank 3: Heroic Toughness

Established Hero

The mutant's durability rivals that of many famous superheroes.

Capabilities:

  • Resist powerful attacks.

  • Endure sustained punishment.

  • Operate in hazardous environments.

  • Protect allies from danger.

Bonus:

+20 AC

Special:

Gain Damage Reduction 5 against non-powered physical attacks.

Examples:

  • Walk through collapsing structures.

  • Survive explosions.

  • Endure concentrated attacks from multiple opponents.

Rank 4: Near Invulnerability

Extraordinary Durability

The mutant approaches true invulnerability.

Only the most powerful attacks pose a serious threat.

Capabilities:

  • Resist heavy weapons.

  • Endure devastating impacts.

  • Survive extreme temperatures.

  • Function during catastrophic events.

Bonus:

+30 AC

Special:

Gain:

  • Damage Reduction 10 against all non-energy attacks.

  • Immunity to environmental extremes.

  • Resistance to poison and disease.

Examples:

  • Walk through firestorms.

  • Survive building collapses.

  • Ignore most conventional weaponry.

Only legendary mutants achieve this level.

Rank 5: Omega Durability

The Unbreakable

The mutant becomes one of the most durable beings on the planet.

At this stage, harming them becomes an achievement in itself.

Capabilities:

  • Near-complete physical invulnerability.

  • Survival against catastrophic forces.

  • Protection from extreme environments.

  • Extraordinary endurance.

Bonus:

+50 AC

Special:

Gain:

  • Damage Reduction 20 against all attacks.

  • Immunity to disease, poison, suffocation, and environmental hazards.

  • Immunity to being knocked prone, stunned, or moved against your will by non-Omega effects.

Additionally, gain Immovable Object:

Once per encounter, automatically negate all damage from a single attack or effect regardless of its source.

Examples:

  • Survive direct missile impacts.

  • Walk through volcanic eruptions.

  • Withstand the force of collapsing skyscrapers.

  • Remain standing against attacks that would devastate entire battlefields.

Only a handful of mutants in history have ever achieved this level.

THE BURDEN OF INVULNERABILITY

Many people assume Toughness is the perfect power.

Few consider its consequences.

A mutant who cannot easily be harmed may become isolated from ordinary experiences.

They may struggle to understand vulnerability.

They may become reckless.

Or they may become the first person willing to place themselves between danger and innocent lives.

Many of the world's greatest protectors possess extraordinary Toughness.

Not because they seek danger.

Because they know they can survive it.

THE EVOLUTION OF RESILIENCE

Toughness is not simply about surviving.

It is about enduring.

A Rank 1 mutant can survive accidents that would injure others.

A Rank 3 mutant can withstand battles that would overwhelm most heroes.

A Rank 5 mutant can stand at the centre of a catastrophe and emerge largely unharmed.

Because while other heroes may be defined by what they can do...

The toughest heroes are often defined by what the world cannot do to them.
