Probability Manipulation Game Mechanics
Power Rank Progression
Probability Manipulation is the ability to influence chance itself.
Most people live in a world governed by statistics, odds, and random events. A Probability Manipulator exists outside those rules, subtly altering the likelihood of success and failure around them.
A dropped key lands exactly where it needs to.
A weapon jams at the worst possible moment.
A critical clue appears when all hope seems lost.
To outsiders, these events often appear to be remarkable luck or unfortunate coincidence.
In reality, they are the result of a mutant quietly reshaping the odds.
As their powers evolve, Probability Manipulators gain increasing influence over the events unfolding around them, eventually becoming capable of turning impossibilities into inevitabilities.
Rank 1: Lucky Break
Emerging Potential
The mutant unconsciously nudges probability in their favour.
Capabilities:
-
Minor luck manipulation.
-
Small fortunate coincidences.
-
Improved success rates.
-
Unexpected opportunities.
Special:
Once per encounter, reroll a failed roll and take the new result.
Examples:
-
Finding a dropped key.
-
Avoiding a minor accident.
-
Arriving at exactly the right moment.
-
Having the right tool available.
Rank 2: Fortune Favours
Trained Influence
The mutant learns to consciously affect probability.
Capabilities:
-
Enhance personal success.
-
Create minor setbacks for opponents.
-
Influence simple outcomes.
-
Increase favourable circumstances.
Special:
Twice per encounter, force a reroll of any roll you can see.
The new result must be accepted.
Examples:
-
A weapon misfires.
-
An enemy trips.
-
A lock opens unexpectedly.
-
A critical clue becomes apparent.
Additionally gain:
Fortunate Timing
Gain +2 Initiative.
Rank 3: Statistical Impossibility
Established Hero
The mutant begins producing outcomes that clearly defy normal probability.
Capabilities:
-
Influence multiple events simultaneously.
-
Cause chains of coincidence.
-
Enhance allies' success.
-
Create meaningful setbacks for enemies.
Special:
Three times per encounter, grant Advantage on a roll or impose Disadvantage on an opponent's roll.
Examples:
-
An enemy's equipment fails.
-
Reinforcements arrive unexpectedly.
-
An ally narrowly avoids disaster.
-
Environmental conditions suddenly become favourable.
Additionally gain:
Fortune's Protection
Once per encounter, convert a successful attack against you into a miss.
Rank 4: Destiny's Hand
Extraordinary Influence
The mutant's control over probability extends far beyond simple luck.
Events begin arranging themselves in increasingly unlikely ways.
Capabilities:
-
Alter major outcomes.
-
Manipulate complex chains of events.
-
Influence entire encounters.
-
Dramatically shift the balance of probability.
Special:
Once per encounter, declare a Highly Unlikely Outcome.
The GM determines a plausible way for that outcome to occur.
Examples:
-
A bridge collapses at the perfect moment.
-
A hidden weakness is discovered.
-
An escape route suddenly becomes available.
-
A critical piece of information surfaces.
Additionally gain:
Probability Shield
Once per round, force an attacker to reroll a successful attack against you.
The second result must be used.
Rank 5: Master of Possibility
Omega Probability
The mutant becomes one of the most powerful probability manipulators in existence.
At this stage, probability itself bends around their presence.
Events that should be impossible become possible.
Events that should be certain become uncertain.
Capabilities:
-
Massive probability alteration.
-
Large-scale coincidence generation.
-
Fate manipulation.
-
Battlefield-wide luck control.
-
Extraordinary statistical anomalies.
Special:
Gain:
Reality's Favourite
Once per encounter, automatically treat any roll as a natural critical success.
No roll is required.
Additionally gain:
Impossible Odds
Three times per encounter, force any creature within line of sight to reroll any result, including critical successes.
The second result must be accepted.
Additionally gain:
Probability Field
All allies within 60 feet gain:
-
+2 to all saving throws.
-
+2 to attack rolls.
-
+2 to skill checks.
Enemies within 60 feet suffer the opposite penalty.
Examples:
-
A missile misses by inches.
-
A collapsing building falls away from civilians.
-
An impossible shot succeeds.
-
A villain's perfect plan unravels through a series of unlikely events.
-
Disaster is narrowly avoided through sheer fortune.
Only a handful of mutants in history have ever achieved this level of influence.
THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT
Probability Manipulation is unique among mutation categories.
Most powers create direct effects.
Probability Manipulation creates consequences.
A tiny shift in fortune can grow into a major event.
A seemingly insignificant coincidence can alter the outcome of an entire battle.
Because of this, Arcadian Institute teaches Probability Manipulators to think carefully about how they use their gifts.
Every choice creates ripples.
Every ripple creates consequences.
THE EVOLUTION OF CHANCE
Probability Manipulation does not become more powerful through greater force.
It becomes more powerful through greater influence.
A Rank 1 mutant gets lucky.
A Rank 3 mutant changes encounters.
A Rank 5 mutant changes destinies.
Because while other heroes fight against impossible odds...
The Probability Manipulator simply changes what those odds are.
