Whether through dense musculature, living metal skin, stone-like physiology, adaptive biology, force-absorbing tissues, or sheer superhuman resilience, mutants with Toughness are capable of surviving extraordinary levels of damage.

While Super Strength is about the power to affect the world around you, Toughness is about the world's inability to affect you.

Bullets bounce.

Explosions are endured.

Impacts that would cripple others become little more than inconveniences.

For many heroes, Toughness is the difference between surviving a battle and becoming a casualty of it.

WHAT IS TOUGHNESS?

Toughness refers to any mutation that dramatically increases a character's ability to withstand injury, environmental hazards, and physical trauma.

This includes abilities such as:

  • Invulnerability

  • Armoured Skin

  • Stone Physiology

  • Metallic Physiology

  • Dense Tissue Structure

  • Impact Resistance

  • Damage Reduction

  • Environmental Resistance

  • Enhanced Endurance

  • Pressure Resistance

  • Heat Resistance

  • Cold Resistance

If your mutation primarily focuses on durability and protection, it likely belongs to this category.

  • Does your appearance change when your powers activate?

  • Have you always been difficult to injure?

  • Do you feel pain normally?

  • How do ordinary people react to your mutation?

  • Does your toughness make you reckless or responsible?

For many mutants, their durability becomes an important part of their identity.

POWER DEVELOPMENT

Toughness often begins with enhanced resilience before evolving into true invulnerability.

A beginning mutant might be capable of:

  • Surviving minor injuries more easily

  • Resisting extreme temperatures

  • Enduring impacts better than normal humans

As their powers develop, they may learn to:

  • Ignore conventional weapons

  • Resist explosions

  • Survive crushing forces

  • Withstand intense heat or cold

  • Endure falls from great heights

  • Resist powerful energy attacks

  • Survive deep underwater pressures
