Example Archetypes

BRAWLER

The Living Weapon

Some mutants are born to stand on the front line.

Brawlers possess mutations that enhance their bodies, allowing them to survive punishment that would cripple ordinary people and deliver devastating physical attacks in return.

Whether through enhanced strength, accelerated healing, superhuman durability, animalistic adaptations, or sheer physical resilience, Brawlers excel when the fighting gets personal.

Many become protectors, defenders, and frontline heroes capable of shielding others from harm.

Examples include mutants similar to Wolverine, Colossus, Beast, Bedrock, and Coach Daniel Steel.

Archetype Bonuses

  • +10 Health

  • +2 Melee Attack

  • +2 Fortitude Saves

Play Style

Brawlers thrive in close combat, absorbing damage and protecting allies while delivering powerful attacks of their own.

Special Ability: Unstoppable

Once per encounter, when reduced below half Health, gain temporary Health equal to your level and immediately make a free melee attack.

BLASTER

Power Unleashed

Blasters channel incredible destructive energy through focused attacks.

Whether projecting optic beams, plasma blasts, lightning bolts, force waves, sonic attacks, or other ranged powers, Blasters are capable of overwhelming enemies from a distance.

Their mutations often manifest as raw power seeking release, making control and discipline just as important as strength.

Many young Blasters struggle to regulate their abilities before receiving proper training.

Examples include mutants similar to Cyclops, Havok, and many energy projectors.

Archetype Bonuses

  • +2 Ranged Attack

  • +2 Will Saves

  • +2 Power Attack (chosen blast power)

Play Style

Blasters dominate battlefields through ranged damage, precision attacks, and overwhelming offensive capabilities.

Special Ability: Overcharge

Once per encounter, a successful Power Attack deals maximum damage without requiring a damage roll.

CONTROLLER

Master of the Battlefield

Controllers reshape the environment itself.

Rather than focusing solely on damage, Controllers manipulate forces around them to influence the flow of combat and control the battlefield.

Some command weather.

Others manipulate metal, stone, fire, water, gravity, shadows, or countless other forces.

A skilled Controller can defeat enemies without ever throwing a punch.

Examples include mutants similar to Magneto, Storm, Ultramarine, and Gravemantle.

Archetype Bonuses

  • +2 Will Saves

  • +2 Power Attack (chosen element or power type)

  • +2 Reflex Saves against attacks of your chosen elemental or power type

Play Style

Controllers excel at battlefield manipulation, crowd control, area effects, and supporting allies through environmental advantages.

Special Ability: Expanded Influence

Once per encounter, increase the area, range, or number of targets affected by one Controller power by 50%.

SPEEDSTER

Faster Than Thought

Speedsters exist in a world moving far slower than themselves.

These mutants possess incredible speed, reflexes, and reaction times that allow them to cross vast distances in moments and act before others can react.

Many Speedsters experience the world differently from everyone around them, perceiving events in fractions of seconds that others barely notice.

While often associated with running, Speedster mutations can also affect perception, reflexes, coordination, and information processing.

Examples include mutants similar to Quicksilver and WhiteNoise.

Archetype Bonuses

  • +20 Movement Speed

  • +2 Initiative

  • +2 Reflex Saves

  • Gain one Additional Action each round (functions similarly to Haste)

Play Style

Speedsters excel at mobility, hit-and-run tactics, rapid response, scouting, and controlling the pace of encounters.

Special Ability: Blur

Once per encounter, automatically avoid a successful attack that targets you.

PSYCHIC

The Power of the Mind

Some mutations awaken extraordinary mental abilities.

Psychics possess powers that allow them to affect minds, perceive thoughts, manipulate objects through mental force, predict events, communicate telepathically, or influence reality through pure willpower.

While often physically less imposing than other Archetypes, Psychics can become some of the most powerful mutants in existence.

Their greatest battles are frequently fought within the mind rather than on the battlefield.

Examples include mutants similar to Professor Arcadian, Professor X, Jean Grey, and many telepaths and telekinetics.

Archetype Bonuses

  • +2 Will Saves

  • +2 Power Attack

  • Telepathic Communication (30 feet)

Play Style

Psychics specialise in mental influence, battlefield support, telepathy, telekinesis, information gathering, and extraordinary utility powers.

Special Ability: Mental Surge

Once per encounter, activate a psychic power without spending Power Points or gain advantage on a single psychic attack, save DC, or mental skill check.

CHOOSING AN ARCHETYPE

Each Archetype represents a different expression of mutant potential.

Brawlers embody resilience and physical dominance.

Blasters unleash raw destructive power.

Controllers shape the battlefield itself.

Speedsters move faster than anyone can react.

Psychics harness the limitless potential of the mind.

No Archetype is inherently stronger than another.

Every hero, from the newest Arcadian student to the legendary Sentinels, began by learning how to understand and control their gifts.

Your Archetype is not your destiny.

It is simply the first step toward discovering the hero you are meant to become.

I think this version feels much more balanced because every archetype now receives:

  • Core statistical bonuses

  • A unique identity

  • A signature once-per-encounter ability

which helps them feel equally exciting during character creation rather than Speedsters being the obvious mechanical favourite.
